QuickBooks is a powerful accounting program that can help you easily
gauge the financial health of your business through the use of proper
accounting principles. Learn QuickBooks software features and
important accounting skills in this course. Includes entering
transactions, analyzing results, correcting errors and organizing
business finances.
Melanie Burtis is associate professor of applied business at
Northwest Campus. She teaches business and computer skills in Nome
and throughout the region. Melanie has a doctoral degree in education.

Create portraits in the traditional medium of your choice: oil,
watercolor, pastel, graphite, charcoal, ink, pencil, etc. Instruction
will emphasize self-expression by developing spontaneous artistic
ideas into a more focused style. Learn to paint or draw portraits
through easy-to-understand lectures and exercises. For beginning and
advanced students. Instruction in the various media will be given as
needed.
Autumn Falls has been a courtroom artist and tattoo artist, and does
portrait commissions. She holds certificates in fine and commercial
arts. Her work has won Best in Show at the Iditarod Fine Arts Show.

Learn to make a King Island-style attigi, or parka! Adapt and cut a
pattern to your size, cut out the pieces, and sew together a finished
product. By the end of class you will have made your own custom-sized
women’s or men’s attigi. It's wearable winter art for yourself or a
loved one! You will need to bring your own sewing machine to class.
PREREQUISITE: APAR 150 Ugalqaq Kuspuk Making or kuspuk-making
experience.
Asaaluk Irelan and Marilyn Koezuna-Irelan are a mother-daughter
teaching team. Both have sewn many King Island-style kuspuks and have
taught these skills to others.

Learn to make pottery and more in this popular class! Immerse
yourself in creating clay objects. Learn to work with clay, build
projects by hand, throw bowls on a wheel, and glaze and fire your
work. Make your own gifts!
Louise Kuntz-Tadda has been a pottery instructor for Northwest Campus
since 2001. Her pieces have won numerous awards at art shows. She has
her own ceramics studio in Nome.

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE PRACTICE with Pearl Mikulski

Learn basic skills in American Sign Language and begin to understand
how to interact with deaf individuals. Lip reading, signing, finger
spelling, interpretation of songs or poems, and cultural aspects of
the deaf “world” will be covered. All skill levels welcome. May be
repeated twice for credit. Class meets at Bible Baptist Church
Pearl Mikulski works as a planner at Kawerak, Inc. She has provided
sign language interpretation for church sermons and has experience
teaching sign language.

Learn the skills needed to mat and frame your own art or photographic
prints. This workshop will introduce students to the supplies, tools
and techniques of mat cutting and framing with both metal and wood
frames. Students will take home new skills and a ready-to-hang piece
of art.
Angela Hansen is an artist, an art instructor, and owner of Angela’s
Art & Frame. She is the organizer of the Iditarod Fine Art Show. This
workshop will be conducted at Angela’s art shop in Icy View.

since 2001. She has taught ceramics to many kids (and adults!). She
has her own ceramics studio in Nome.

GILGAMESH: CIVILIZATION’S FIRST EPIC with Paul Korchin

Uncover the primeval roots of the epic genre with a study of
Gilgamesh, an ancient tale of a part-human, part-divine hero-king
seeking the meaning of life. Read and analyze the story with the help
of linguistic, archaeological, artistic, and cultural references to
the Sumerian and Akkadian originals from 4,000 years ago. We will
discuss the primeval substance and structure of the epic genre, and
how it resonates in later examples such as Odyssey and Beowulf.
Paul Korchin has a doctoral degree in Near Eastern languages and
civilizations from Harvard University. He has taught many courses at
Northwest Campus. Paul is news director at KNOM.

COLOR THEORY & APPLICATIONS
with Kathy Mallory

Without application, readings in color theory are little understood.
Students in this course will come to understand color behavior and
theory through a series of exercises and direct applications with
paper, acrylic paint, and their own art or craft medium. This course
is for painters and non-painters alike who want to learn more about
using color in their work.
Kathy Mallory is an oil painter who lives at Banner Creek. Two of her
paintings are in the Anchorage Museum of History and Art's permanent
collection. She has received an Individual Artist Award from the
Rasmuson Foundation.

SCULPTURE & MOLD-MAKING TECHNIQUES FOR
BRONZE & CERAMIC SCULPTURES with Cam Kristenson

In this course students will be shown how to make armatures for clay
sculptures. When the sculptures are made students will then learn how
to replicate there sculptures in a variety of mediums including:
plaster, wax, rockite, and ceramic slip.
Award-winning artist Cam Kristensen holds a bachelor of fine arts
degree in metalsmithing and Native arts from the University of Alaska
Fairbanks. Cam works for Crowley Marine Services.

CLIMATE CHANGE IN ALASKA with Claudia Ihl

The purpose of this class is to give students the basic scientific
background knowledge they need in order to understand and critically
interpret the large amount of information on climate change that is
available today. We will compare today’s climate change with those of
the past, dissect critical arguments for and against human causes of
climate change and examine evidence for climate change and its
consequences in our region from scientific studies and traditional
Native knowledge.
Claudia Ihl, NWC biology professor, has researched muskox and caribou
behavior and the effect of climate change on their grazing ranges.

UNDERSTANDING DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
with Hugh Thomas

Eight 2-hour sessions / 1 credit / CIOS 258
Cost: $137 + materials
Learn about tools and methods you can use to create and edit digital
images. Become a better photographer, with an emphasis on how to
create thoughtful photographs that hold a greater meaning and display
a larger presence than the average snapshot. Learn how to get proper
exposures, and how to adjust exposure, color balance, curves and
levels of digital images using Adobe Photoshop. Learn to retouch
faces and how to use portrait effects.
Hugh Thomas has been a full-time professional photographer for
seventeen years, doing commercial work for five years, then portrait
and wedding photography for twelve. He owned Nautilus Photography, a
high-end portrait studio in Ft. Myers, Florida.

BEGINNING BOOKBINDING with Heather Neal Kasvinsky

This class is an introduction to techniques, materials and resources
for creating books. Instruction includes the following: Preparation
of materials and design choices for Japanese stab binding, origami
books, pamphlet stitching, accordion folds and exposed stitch/multi-
signature structures. Students construct a variety of book structures
from a single sheet to a multi-section hardcover blank book.
Visiting art instructor Heather Neal Kasvinsky received an maste’s
degree in printmaking from Arizona State University. Specializing in
etching, drypoint, lithography, monoprinting, book arts, letterpress
and hand papermaking, she has taught fine arts at the college level
for the past eight years. Heather is a studio artist living in
Fairbanks.

NORTHWEST CAMPUS WRITERS GROUP with Nancy Mendenhall

Nine 2-hour sessions / Non-credit workshop / Cost: $20
This writers workshop is open to anyone age 16 and older who is
interested in a peer critique of their works in progress, and who
will bring samples of their own work of fiction, personal history, or
other nonfiction to share. We will all offer positive critiques for
each other’s samples. Regular attendance and participation are
important!
Nancy Mendenhall has lived in this region since 1970 and taught
English at Northwest Campus. Now retired, she has written regional
social histories and is working on a book on small-scale fishing. She
coordinated an oral history project for Nome in 1996-99.
