We are looking for some instructors in carpentry, electricity, plumbing and heavy equipment mechanics for our apprenticeship program at Kawerak.
We are using the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) programs and this requires that anyone instructing our apprentices needs to be NCCER certified. They also have to be a Journeyman or higher in their expertise or a recognized expert.
We will be having an NCCER Train the Trainers class to certify new instructors next week (Aug 13-15 Wed, Thurs, Fri). It is a 24 hour class that assumes you w=know what you are teaching and works on techniques of teaching and reaching students. It also goes over the paperwork necessary to make the NCCER system work for each student.
We have approximately 12 apprentices throughout the area, working in these fields and we are trying to maintain a commitment to give them one year of classroom training for every year of practical experience they gain on the job. In 4 years this will give them the basis to to take the state certifying tests to become journeymen in their fields.
Currently, I have 4 prospective teachers signed up for this Train the Trainers class. I can have up to 10. Jerry Trainor is the instructor. He is working for UAF now, but he was the vice president of the Education Employment and Training (EET) division of Kawerak before he retired in 2000. He's a dedicated and exciting instructor.
If you would like to join the class and are a Journeyman in carpentry, electricity, plumbing or heavy equipment mechanics, call me 443-4388 or reply to this email.
We generally have about 4 or 5 NCCER classes (each approximately 3-4 weeks long) a year in this region, so this can't be considered full or even part time. But we do pay for your time when you are instructing and this is a nice way to give back and help some others along a path you enjoyed.
